As I said, I'm sure my other blog is gone for good. Of course there is some sentimental feeling of loss, but I'm OK with it. Even the internet is wabi sabi.

Here's some quick things:
- Saw Watchmen this weekend. If you haven't seen it I'm sure all reviews will do it justice. The consensus among those I've talked to is that it was good, faithful adaptation, good cast, changing the end didn't affect it enough to be upset over it, and most of the popular music selections should have been better.

-Went to California recently to be the best man in my best friend's wedding. The whole trip went really smoothly. There was some pesky rain that KC, for some reason, didn't stop from happening but it didn't impose too mcuh. While we were there Jeremy met my family (most of them) and I got to meet Josh and Bethany's new baby. KC rewarded me with cleansers, meat, and footwear.

-Saw Dina Martina again, too. That bitch is funny.


-Oh, KC has a new stepdaughter. So I now have a "step-niece from another mother". She's three so our conversations are somewhat limited. But I know that she likes stickers and money. I've gotten a couple of pictures from her. This is my favorite.

And out of nowhere..a post about soaps.

I learned a lot about McKenzie Westmore when I went to her site...She's a christian country singer, she was in Raging Bull, she's the daughter of a Star Trek makeup artist. Things I feel I should have known. But there is one thing I know about her from watching her for nine years on Passions, and now in a role on All My Children. She's best at playing bad.
On Passions, she spent years portraying Sheridan Crane as a helpless, damsel-in-distress type. She was buried alive, sank on the Titanic and I swear there was an entire year where she was trapped in a pit giving birth. But towards the end of the show's run the character took an evil turn, blackmailing, abetting, and almost murdering, mostly to get her man back after she royally fucked it up with him.
That's when it all clicked. I think Westmore is an enthusiastic actress (great for soaps) but that energy was wasted crying for help all those years. Now that Passions is over she has a new role on All My Children. She plays Dr. Sinclare, a doctor who is trying to prove crazy Annie is faking her mental illness. She clearly has an agenda and is all mean and bitchy. It makes me happy to see her in a role that suits her more, evil is always more fun. Speaking of evil, Annie is much better as a crazy/evil person as well. When she first came on the scene she was considered (I think a character actually said this)a cheap imitation of Greenlee Smythe. But then she lost her man (seeing a pattern), killed her brother and some other people, stabbed Erica and some other people, then just went all kinds of crazy. It is my guess that Sinclare's agenda has something to do with Richie, the brother that Annie killed.

Other fun things today:

-A lesbian wedding shower gone awry illustrates how homosexual relationships don't always fit easily into a hetero-centric model.

-Erica throws snow at Bianca

-The only one who can get through David Hayward's gruff exterior is a burn victim.

My Christmas was pretty great. Jeremy got me a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I've been practicing with it by tracing photos. I owe Jeremy a portrait. KC, Jen and Sophie made Jeremy and me a comfy new blanket. I feel pretty crummy though since I officially didn't get anyone anything. Jeremy's gift is over a week late getting here because of the snow. I still haven't been able to successfully burn CDs for KC. And the card I painted for my grandparents hasn't been sent yet. Looks like I got plenty to do during my vacation!

I talked to my best friend KC on the phone today and we discussed election things. He told me that there was a surprising amount of McCain supporters in Humboldt County. He also told me about the intense campaign between both sides of the Proposition 8 thingie that revokes the legal gay marriage in California. I forgot how polarized issues like this are in California, the unyielding, thick-skinned gays versus the people that God speaks through. Quite an epic battle. Things like this are much more diluted in Seattle, but I suppose everything is, isn't it?
I looked up some Prop 8 ads on Youtube. When approached with an amount of logic, the pro-8 ads (that would be in favor of revoking the right to same sex marriage) are simultaneously ignorant and mean, as well as taking on the "The right is so oppressed" tone. One of their angles is basically "If you allow same-sex marriage, we'll have to acknoledge that you exist." They argue that adoption agencies will have to allow gay couples to adopt babies and things like that, but my favorite is when they don't understand how they're supposed to talk to their kids about it. This one was good:

REALLY?! Are you serious? This couple went through all the trouble of adopting a child and raising her and they never thought about how they would explain it to their kid? She totally blind-sided them! "You should spend less time at Megan's"? Really? They think ignoring the problem will make it go away? Maybe they're conservative Gays. Even better is when straight couples don't want to explain it to their kids. Comedian Louis C.K. had a bit about when a parent asks "How do I explain this to my child?" His reply is "I don't care, it's your shitty kid, you fucking tell them. Two men can't get married because you don't want to talk to your ugly child for five minutes?
Unfortunately, the um...gay side doesn't seem to have ads that are quite as powerful.
That's the problem when you want something (even rights), you can't use fear tactics, you have to tug at the heartstrings. Kind of a bummer that the gays cant use their ability to be bitchy and cut-throat. All they can do is be on the defensive, which they do well enough by addressing and countering the details of their attacks like in this series of ads, which most likely weren't on TV:

When California got the o.k. on gay marriage I thought "Maybe that place isn't as bad as I make it out to be," but seeing these ads and hearing what the climate is like, both political and, uh..weatheral, gives me that ucky feeling that I now recall a little better.

It's the day before the big election. Lord knows I don't pay a whole lot of attention to politics and don't get visibly excited over much. However my paramour has, in recent days, said things like (I'm paraphrasing) "Can you believe we're going to have a new president so soon?" and "Isn't this exciting?" As the day draws nearer I can feel it. This is some big, crazy shit. Many will celebrate. Many will be angry. This election has captured the attention of many people who otherwise don't care much for politics, myself included. During the last election I was homeless so I didn't really give a shit. The election before that I voted for Gore without really thinking about it. Now I'm on the literal edge of my figurative seat. I really can't wait to see what happens, how things will change, how things will stay painfully the same. While I voted for Obama (duh), I will still wear my "Fonzie for President" pin on Monday and Tuesday.

I had a very good example from around 2003, but i really don't want to look for the images and scan them right now. Instead, I'll just show you the one I did today. I took it from a photo from Stephen Shore's book Uncommon Places.

By no means is my rendition of this woman as fabulous as she is. And I tells ya, a brush tipped pen can do a lot to add depth to a line drawing. Or probably a real brush, but that's too messy for me.

My Uncle Reggie took this picture of my family at dinner in Reno, NV the other night. It's not common for all of us to be together at the same time. I don't think these smiles were even posed, for the most part.
I was laughing at something my brother David said. "I'm saving that for the girls at Circus Circus." It was funny, but I missed the first part and I have no idea what "that" was.

gluten for punishment

My friend/coworker/Filthy's Angel Rachel has surprised me. She doesn't eat meat or dairy or wheat or gluten or anything and naturally when I think of vegan food, bacon and cheese lover that I am, I think "yuck". Rachel, however, has managed to make some kick-ass peach cobbler, key lime tarts, and enchiladas. Hopefully she will continue to make great food and give it to me.

Here I am with one of her kittens. I am refraining from making any "pussy" jokes because they have all already been made.

brand new bag

Are you one of those people who goes to the grocery store and, when checking out, realizes that you forgot your reusable shopping bag? You say "Oh no, I left it in the car," or "It's hanging on the door at home." You begrudgingly take a paper or plastic bag, feeling guilty rather than green as you singlehandedly deepen the footprint that humans are leaving on the planet?

I'm here to tell you not to worry. It's fine, really. Just the fact that people are aware of it at all is progress. We have decades of plastic-bag-use to recondition, it's not going to happen overnight. Soon enough you will remember to bring that bag out of your house and into your car. Then out of your car and into the store. I've noticed a lot of people just scraping the whole idea and going sans bag, period.

So worry not, eco-conscious friends. I'msure you'll remember to bring that bag instinctively, especially when we start charging you for paper or plastic :)
