gay lei

When my bosses bought the store I work at, one of them, the one who runs the deli, decided that Wednesday was Hawaiian Day (*shrug*). The best part about this is that they make a SPAM sandwich with pineapple, tomato, red onion and provolone. I like SPAM, but was still surprised by how much I liked this sandwich.
There were a bunch of leis around the deli area today, the deli people were wearing them. I noticed the rainbow ones because, well, I'm a fag. I decided to get a photo of me with it on for fun. I missed Gay Day, and probably wouldn't have donned a rainbow anyway, but here...a rare sight...Phil being all "pridey".

but they're cousins!

I recently shaved my beard. Jeremy shaved his a couple of days ago. I only have one picture of us together with beards and he won't let me get a new "after" picture (yet). So let me just say we look less like Brian Posehn and Steve Agee, the gay couple from The Sarah Silverman Program:

and more like Bert and Ernie, the gay couple from Sesame Street.

i take rad pictures

I went bowling last night and just had to get a picture of Chelsea when I saw her standing like this:

I really like the composition of this picture. It's something about the absurd colors and shapes on her shirt aligned with the bowling balls as well as the row of beers aligned with her head. Too bad it was my camera phone, but it's still a better picture than if I had had my regular digital camera.

Here's another of Chelsea and Nick:

so wierd

At work feeling a lot better. It's so strange, this has happened the last three days. I wake up severely depressed. As the day goes on I battle it in waves. By nine or ten pm I'm okay again feeling silly for how I felt before. Is it work related, since I get off at 10:30? Is it related to the sun? What's going on?
I think blogging about it might help me out a bit, even if no one cares to read about it. It's MY blog, dammit!
later, dudes.

I signed my car over to a wrecking yard today. It makes me really sad. It also sets my goals back a bit. I loved that car. I drove it into this city when I moved here. It's for the best, but I wish it didn't have to happen while my emotions are already out of control. My stomach always hurts, like I'm about to give a speech in front of a large audience. I've felt like I've been swimming upstream since I got back from California. I thought I was over it, but I'm still having a little trouble. Yet I persevere. This, too, shall pass.

Let it be known

You may be surprised to see that I've shaved my beard. You should not be surprised to see that I am still remarkably handsome.

Welcome Back

I'm happy to announce that Vanilla Coke is back! They stopped making it a year and a half ago. A co-worker and I bought up as much of it as we could when we found that out. Now it's back and I'm temperately excited.
I couldn't find an image of the new label, but it's not that different. I looked for an image on the Coke website and I must say, their site is pretty lame.

oy

I always talk shit about California, but deep down I kind of thought it was just me being my usual pessimistic, cynical self. I say that I will never move back there, no matter what. I just got back from visiting my parents there not two hours ago and I have to say...it's worse than I thought. I don't want to go back ever, not even to visit my family.
The disgusting black hole that is Antioch is crammed with chain restaurants, super stores and cookie-cutter homes with no yards. It is convenience disguised as luxury, catering to people who cannot live within their means. There is not the slightest indication of any sort of culture whatsoever.
Yes there were good parts about my visit, and the first two days were fun, but the last two caused me some great anxiety, enough for me to have to go outside for air when I went to lunch with my mother. Perhaps I'll write about the good stuff (and more bad stuff) later, but now I'm venting.
If my folks want to see me again, they can come visit me here. We can go to eat at a place they think is too expensive, they can tell me how senile my grandparents are getting and what a handful my (adult)siblings are, and they can politley pretend I don't have a boyfriend.
I missed you , Seattle. You are my home.

The sound of bottles crashing is music to my ears

My best friend sent me this banner:

It's a good movement and I support it morally, but I can't say I can participate. Even when I do try to type out all my words, I'm trying to do it so fast that I misspell them all anyway.
However, I do vow never to use a certain term in the context of a blog, except this once, and that is "meme". It's a perfectly valid word, coined in the seventies by Richard Dawkins, but for some reason it bothers me in the context of blogs and internet discussion threads. Is it because I'm an elitist snob? Almost definitely. While the term bothers me, that does not mean I won't participate in what it represents. So here is my media player shuffle soundtrack:

Opening credits:Folk Implosion - Fall Into November

Waking up:Lou Barlow- Alone to decide

First day of school:Supervitesse-Conectivity!
wow, I didn't know I had this one!

Falling in love:Ed Shepp- Eat the Pussy
I shit you not. This one is Scott's fault

First song: Electric six- I'm the bomb
Scott again. Damn him.

Break up: 88 lines about 44 women

Prom:Skankin Pickle- Take a look
I like it because it would be a really terrible prom.

Driving: Animal Collective-grass
Cool! That one works great!

flashback: Sonic youth- Pacific Coast Highway
flashback to something creepy!

New realtionship: Lou BArlow- Cranky
Not a good start to a relationship

Wedding: Hungry like the Wolf- duran duran

Beer purchase: Single girl,Married girl-boontdusties(me!)
I changed this from "Birth of kittens" which was changed from "birth of baby". I'm just being silly. The song is a haunting version of the Carter Family song that I did with friends who didnt practice it with me before recording :(

final battle:Happy Mondays- 24hr party people
That would be an awesome battle!

death scene:Beatles- In my life
Aww...

funeral:madness- our house
uh...okay

End credits:She's a rainbow- Rolling stones
Perfect!

The place I ought not be

I'm flying to California next week to visit my family. California is a beautiful state in some places and I recommend visiting, if you know where to go. Do not go, however, to Antioch, regardless of what this video tells you.

What they don't tell you is that most of what they show you has been built in the last five years. When I was growing up Antioch was just a normal crappy little town. Now that part is just in the center, surrounded by hot, sterile concrete. Any part that looks pretty and scenic in that video is just yards away from a housing development and strip mall.
I am glad to see that the El Campanil Theater, where I saw movies like Ghostbusters 2 and My Girl, is no longer run by the evangelists who would do a Hell House play every halloween.
They also mention Black Diamond Mines, where my friend David's dad gave me my first beer when I was about eleven years old. He's dead now.
Just for fun, also check out this Police Department recruitment video. I once got grounded for saying "I smell bacon." while outside the police station.

You can hear a dispatcher say "behind the Regal" at one point, Regal being the multiplex movie theater. Behind it is where KC and I got stoned before seeing movies like Election and X-men. Good times.

One thing I'm looking forward to is visiting my grandparents. I think I'll get a picture with them this time.

A Public Apology

I want to apologize to anyone who was at Re-Bar this past Sunday night. I had never been there before, even though I had heard about it from my boyfriend since before he and I even met, and I'll be damned if I didn't make a most deplorable impression. The entire day was full of socializing and for me that usually means drinking. It got out of hand pretty quickly. I'm no stranger to drinking, but rarely do I get so shitfaced and embarass my man in front of people he hardly gets to see anymore, what with his unaccomidating work schedule.
Although I don't deserve it, I would ask a favor. If you see me, please do not tell me any of the details. The Catholic guilt I felt for two days is penance enough. I have a great boyfriend, I have learned from this mistake and now that I've cleared my conscience I hope I can put it to rest.

A stranger's just a friend who doesn't talk

The other night my gentleman friend and I were looking for something to do. We ended up meeting Bill and Andrew at the Madison Pub. I was digging this because I hadn't seen Andrew since I met him and the Mad Pub is my favorite of the like five gay bars I've been to. There I was trying to get a buzz on, but not drink too much too fast, as I had the night before. I was probably on my second beer (I actually had a short pause between numbers one and two) when this dude who was just kind of hovering around decided to have a sit and listen to any conversations going on in our group. And wouldn't you know it, he sits next to me. That's when Jeremy starts with the "Who's your friend?" "Introduce yourself." "He looks lonely." This went on as I drank my next few beers rather quickly.
I'm not sure what Jeremy's motivation was. Was it to get me out of my shell and socialize with a total stranger? Was it to create an uncomfortable situation for me for his own amusement? Was it pity for this lonely dude? All of the above? Whatever the case my problem, most likely induced by beer, was that I somehow felt that I absolutely had to talk to this guy. I didn't want to. He didn't seem the slightest bit interesting and didn't say a word, no matter how many bar conversations he sat in on. But I felt a force that was beyond me, provoking me into doing this chore. Like I said it was probably the beer.
After about four beers I stomp up to this guy. With the combination of my determination and my drinking I must have seemed crazy or scarily intense. "You're here alone, right?! Why? Why don't you have any friends?!? Are you a fucking loser?!" I obviously didn't say it like that, but I don't really remember how I said it. I do remember that when I said my name was Phil, he thought I said "Joel", which was his name. That's how I knew he was really tossed and anything I did or said was really of no consequence.
I introduced him to the others, asked him a question or two, went to get my beer, then started talking to Bill or something. I think a few exchanges were made but the guy still hung around quietly, then went to The Cuff. We went there later and I saw him but didn't say anything.
He was given a prime opportunity to make some friends. Maybe he's a bad conversationalist (I can relate).Maybe he didn't like us. Maybe he just likes to sit there and stare. Whatever the reason, it was a weird experience for me, doing something out of character like that, and if I see him again maybe I'll say hi. If I recognize him. I had had a lot of beer, after all.

Outa Tha Loop

A friend recently posted the chart-topping songs from the year he turned 18. I decided to use his resource, popculturemadness.com, to see just how "with it" I am.
First, I looked at the top songs from 1981, the year I was born, then compared them to last year's hits. Here's what I got:

1981
-December 27, 1980 - January 30, 1981: (Just Like) Starting Over John Lennon
It's John Lennon! Of course it's good! I mean, I always said if the Beatles hadn't done it (revolutionized music) someone else would have, but the fact is they did, and I rarley hear a Lennon song I dislike.
-January 31 - February 6: The Tide Is High Blondie
In High School, My sister got me a cassette of the Best of Blondie. (This was one of the first times I saw a cool side of her. Another was when she dressed up as John Coltrane for Halloween. My folks made her take that make-up off post-haste!)This was a song that stuck out as one of my favorites. I get a little sad when I hear it now because of the opening credits of Longtime Companion, and it always makes me think of AIDS.
-February 7 - February 20: Celebration Kool & The Gang
Anyone who ever went to an adolecent dance after this came out has heard this song.
-February 21 - March 6: 9 to 5 Dolly Parton
Woo-Hoo! Dolly? Lilly? Dabney? Rad!..but that's just the movie. This song is pretty catchy, though, and similar to Lennon, Dolly rarley disapoints.
-March 7 - March 20: I Love A Rainy Night Eddie Rabbitt
I don't particularly like this song, but I DO love rainy nights.
-March 21 - March 27: Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon
Sometimes it's hard to tell whether I like a song or not anymore, but I can sing along with the chorus when I hear it on Muzak
-March 28 - April 10: Rapture - Blondie
And now you're in the man from Mars, you go out at night, eating cars...
-April 11 - May 1: Kiss On My List - Hall & Oates
Catchy
-May 2 - May 15: Morning Train (Nine To Five) - Sheena Easton
Fun
-May 16 - July 17: Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
Awesome
-July 18 - July 24: Medley - Stars on 45
I don't know this. I guess they did a lot of medleys, but I dont know which one this is
-July 25 - July 31: The One That You Love - Air Supply
Had to look it up because if it's Air Supply there's a good chance I knew it, but didn't know it's them. I don't know it.
-August 1 - August 14: Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield
Another Muzak favorite.
-August 15 - October 16: Endless Love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
Dont know this one, either
-October 17 - November 6: Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) - Christopher Cross
Or this one
-November 7 - November 20: Private Eyes - Hall & Oates
I can still hear Nina Blackwood trying to sell them on an 80's CD comp infomercial.
-November 21, 1981 - January 29, 1982: Physical - Olivia Newton-John
Never saw Xanadu (I'm the world's worst fag), but I LOVE this song (ok, mybe not the worst)

Now let's see what I have to say about the 2006 hits:
2006
January 7 - January 13: Don't Forget about Us - Mariah Carey
Never heard of it
January 14 - January 20: Laffy Taffy - D4L
Never heard of it
January 21 - February 3: Grillz - Nelly featuring Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp
Never heard of it
February 4 - March 10: Check on It - Beyoncé featuring Slim Thug
Never heard of it
March 11 - March 17: You're Beautiful - James Blunt
I finally recognize a song and it's THAT one?!
March 18 - March 31: So Sick - Ne-Yo
Never heard of it
April 1 - April 7: Temperature - Sean Paul
Never heard of it
April 8 - May 12: Bad Day - Daniel Powter
Heard it. It sounded like it came out in 1995.
May 13 - June 2: SOS - Rihanna
Never heard of it
June 3 - June 16: Ridin' - Chamillionaire featuring Krayzie Bone
Never heard of it
June 17 - June 30: - Hips Don't Lie Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
Never heard of it
July 1 - July 7: Do I Make You Proud Taylor Hicks
Never heard of it
July 8 -August 19: Promiscuous Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland
Never heard of it
August 19 - September 8: London Bridge Fergie
Never heard of it
September 9 - October 27th: SexyBack Justin Timberlake
Ok, I've heard this one, but not enough to get sick of it. I don't really like Timberlake, but I have nothing against him.
October 28 - November 10th: Money Maker Ludacris featuring Pharrell
Never heard of it
December 2 - December 15: I Wanna Love You Akon featuring Snoop Dogg
Never heard of it
December 16 - February 23 2007: Irreplaceable Beyoncé
Never heard of it

So, I think it's safe to say that I am completley out of the loop. I don't really care, the loop seems to like shitty music.

Gym Dandy

I went to my first session at the gym today. I decided my main concerns at this time are cardio, trying to get my circular system in shape, and tone. I'm fine with my weight, i just want to increase density and definition.
When I quit smoking I was concerned that I would be eating too much. I didn't care if I gained weight but stuffing my face constantly couldn't be good. Turns out, as the dude tells me, I may not be eating enough. How lucky is that? I LOVE eating.
After talking for a bit the trainer dude set me loose. I worked out a bit then hit the showers. Upon doing so I realized I'm going to have the same problem at the gym that I had in high school...I can't see a thing without my glasses.
