Capitol Hill Art Walk Dec 2010

Tonight I went to Blitz,the Capitol Hill Art Walk a nd took some pictures. I figured this would be a good place to put the pictures. It was raining so I didn't go to too many places, but I got my usual awesome corndog at The Unicorn.

I recently started using Twitter again. An artist I follow on there suggested I use the #draw365 tag, the purpose of which is to post a new drawing everyday. I've kept up pretty well so far and enjoy seeing other people's drawings every day.a

Here are the first five I've done so far.

I did this one last week, it's watercolor, acrylic, ink and collage.



I also finished this one probably a couple of months ago. It's mostly acrylic with some ink too.

wild things

There's a fun website, Terrible Yellow Eyes, that posts artwork inspired by the book "Where the Wild Things Are" as a tribute to author Maurice Sendak. I somehow never read the book. I never had a teacher read it to the class and we didn't have it at home. I just never picked it up. Still, I'm familiar enough with the artwork and the idea of the book to appreciate the illustrations presented here. I think they're all really cool. I think anyone with fond memories of it will like them even more.

fun web stuff

Canadian illustrator Marc Ngui has done a series of intense if not cool posters for the Transportation Department of Finland, about the dangers of being distracted while driving, called "Final Thoughts."


A very design-oriented site, agrayspace.com, has put up a gallery of Polish Movie Posters. They are a lot of fun to look at. There are about 200 here, on one page, so loading may be a pain. Here are a couple for Alien and Sex, lies, and Videotape. Guess which is which.




Plan59.com is a fun site that describes itself as "THE MUSEUM (AND GIFT SHOP) OF MID-CENTURY ILLUSTRATION". They have oodles and oodles of this stuff. They recently started a blog on there called Pastelogram. I can't seem to find an rss feed thing for it. Take a look for me and tell me if I'm just an idiot.

I found this comic page I drew in junior high. I remember drawing it, but not the context it was in. As near as I can tell it wasn't part of any real story, the heroes liked to disable faceless soldiers on space ships but were too noble to kill them, and had no trouble flying into the vacuum of space afterwards. The heroes consist of two people made of slime, one girl made of electricity, a cyborg, a guy who could glide, a guy with a metal face and one made up of cosmic energy. Thay also seem very full of themselves. What a fun bunch.
Here's another space drawing, but i did this last year because Sagar was supposed to make a t-shirt of it. He was supposed to do three that I designed. The two others had robots. He never did...but i might still have the designs around...

Way back when, this woman with no shoes asked us for a quarter. We said only if we could take her picture. Years later I used that picture for this illustration. I'm sure I still have the photo but I'm not going to look for it.

i take rad pictures

I went bowling last night and just had to get a picture of Chelsea when I saw her standing like this:

I really like the composition of this picture. It's something about the absurd colors and shapes on her shirt aligned with the bowling balls as well as the row of beers aligned with her head. Too bad it was my camera phone, but it's still a better picture than if I had had my regular digital camera.

Last night I spent a lot of time drawing a small, four-panel comic strip about a stupid aspect of my stupid job. My immersion in this activity caused both people I was IMing with to question my presence and/or consciousness. It made me feel good to get lost in something like that again. It's been a while.
Here it is:

I get pretty upset evertime I want to scan something. Since my scanner broke I have to take digital pictures of everything and none of my cameras are of any quality.
I never fully finished my last art project. I made the "technophobe" picture for Jeremy, but never took a picture of it. other than that I haven't really worked on anything since the last post about it. Harumph.

Rad Wedding (or parts of it, anyway)

I went to a rad wedding, or at least the best parts with all the drinking. The rehersal dinner and the reception. I met a lot of cool people. I was suprised with how easy it was to talk to most of them, considering I only knew the bride, the groom, and the minister(biblically) before this weekend.
During dinner, the groom even took the time to find out the band who played a song that was on the PA. for me. See, it had ben stuck in my head for something like 3 days and I could not remember who did it(it was Wilco).
The whole shebang was at Marco's Supper Club and the dinner was excellent. I have never had bacon wrapped steak before and naturaly one would think it would be delicious. Still, I think Marco's was probably excellent in it's own right.
Jeremy got us a room at the Ace Hotel, a very design-oriented joint. It was something else! The room had what the desk guy called an "interesting design feature." At the head of the bed was a huge pane of glass. On the other side was the shower. So you could totally watch someone. Take a shower. And yes, the room was a cool as it sounds.

So, yeah, I had a pretty rad weekend. Although because of all the drinking, as usual when i drink so much, I feel like i forgot a bunch of stuff to do or bills to pay or something. When i got home this afternoon my room smelled quite literaly like something was rotting in it (and I know exactly what it was). That prompted me to clean the whole thing so now that I have a clean room, my weekend was even better!

An Art Project

I text messaged a bunch of my friends asking them to send me one-word responses as inspiration for artwork. All replied, but I've only gotten around to a few of them.
The first one was from Nate, Who sent me "Scoundrel".

I did this while wasted on vodka. There's a sneer in there, but I dont know how clear that is in the photo. Sadly, I dont currently have a flatbed scanner. The roughly geometric background shapes are something I like to do, inspired by Sam Keith.
Another was Chelsea who sent me "Mice." Once she figured out it was me texting her, she elaborated. "Mutant mice with handguns battling dragons." I think this will be another ink drawing with watercolor. I did a quick one (still drunk) but it looked crappy.

I've been practicing dragons. Here's a drawing of me feeling the dragon out:

I want him to look real mean. I have a better doodle in my notepad at work.
Another one I got was from Tony. He sent me "stilts". This will probably just be a line drawing. I have a thumbnail for it, but thats about it:

My man, Jeremy, sent me "technophobe." I have a good idea for this one, but no sketches yet. I want to finish one or more of the other ideas before I start on that one.
